Ukrainian refugees can stay in Germany with an expired passport, DW reports

A representative of the Berlin Senate reported that Ukrainian refugees may be given the opportunity to stay in Germany, even if their passports have already expired. This happened due to a change in the approach to solving the issues of the stay of foreigners in Germany.

The publication notes that all issues related to the stay of foreigners in Germany belong to the competence of the regional authorities.

In Berlin, it was stated that granting or extending a temporary residence permit in Germany to Ukrainian refugees does not require them to have a valid passport. The main thing is that the German authorities have at least some possibility to establish the identity.

Moreover, after the refusal of the consulate to issue the document, Ukrainians will be able to obtain a travel document for trips abroad, replacing a passport, at the Berlin Land Office for Foreigners.

But they will do so only in exceptional cases, if the person proves good reasons for the trip.
