Some of the Ukrainian refugees, who, after the start of a full -scale invasion of Russia in 2022, received shelter in the United States, began to return to Europe. About it reports the French edition of Le Monde , referring to the testimony of the Ukrainians and sources in humanitarian organizations.
The reason for this was the uncertainty related to the possible curtailment of migration programs by the Donald Trump administration, in particular the initiative of "unity for Ukraine". This program was implemented by the Joe Biden administration in April 2022 and allowed more than 240,000 Ukrainians to be temporarily in the United States.
However, after Trump's victory in the US presidential election, the policies of Ukrainian refugees began to change. The media reports the suspension of a number of assistance programs, the growth of bureaucratic barriers, and rumors that "unification for Ukraine" can be finally curtailed.
In such circumstances, many families have begun to look for alternatives in the European Union, where there is a more stable legal regulation of refugees from Ukraine. Some of the people return to Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic and other states, which in 2022 provided temporary protection to Ukrainians.
"To live in a constant anticipation that you can send you or take away the right to a legal stay tomorrow," says 39-year-old Natalia from Kharkiv, who recently moved with Chicago to Wroclaw with her children.
Le Monde notes that for many Ukrainians who have already adapted in the United States, the decision was not easy to return, but the threat of losing everything through a new migration policy was a stronger argument. In view of this, in Europe they are preparing for a new wave of returns and trying to increase the infrastructure for refugees.
