Ukrainian winter traditions: when we celebrate in 2024

Winter holidays in Ukraine have always been special. They are filled with joyful rituals, folk songs and sincere wishes that are passed down from generation to generation. With the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to the New Julian calendar in September 2023, the dates of some traditional holidays and ceremonies have changed. So, when are they caroling, generous and sowing now?

Christmas caroling begins with Christmas, which according to the new style is celebrated on December 25 . You can also carol the day before, during Christmas Eve — December 24 .

Caroling is mainly performed by children, although adults can also join in the ritual. The songs glorify the birth of Jesus Christ, wish health, well-being and prosperity to the owners of the house. The more beautiful and longer the carol is performed, the more generously the carolers are rewarded. Traditional carols include "Good evening to you", "New joy has come", "God is born".

When do they give generously in Ukraine according to the new style?

They give generously on the eve of the New Year - December 31 , when the Generous Evening or the holiday of Malanka is celebrated.

The generosity is accompanied by fun parties, dressing up in Goat, Melanka or St. Basil costumes. Wishes for happiness, goodness, wealth and a generous table in the new year sound in the scherdrivka. One of the most famous shchedrivas is Shchedryk, which is known and loved all over the world.

When are they sown in 2024?

Sowing falls on January 1 , when the church day of Basil the Great .

This holiday symbolizes a new beginning, so during the ceremony, boys and men sprinkle the houses with grain, singing the sowers. The songs wish for a good harvest, wealth and happiness for the whole year. According to tradition, men should be the first to enter the house, because this is considered a good omen.

For those who celebrate in the old style

Those who follow the old calendar celebrate holidays on other days:
