Two far-right parties in NATO countries wanted to get parts of Western Ukraine in the event of Kyiv's defeat. At the same time, they referred to territorial disputes that have been going on for centuries, writes Newsweek.
"We will not be truly sovereign until we restore the Romanian state within its natural borders," said one of the leaders of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), Claudio Tarziu.
According to him, Bucharest needs to take control of Bessarabia, Northern Bukovina and Carpathian Region, so that Romania becomes "one of the leading countries in the world".
The leader of the Hungarian party "Nasha Batkivshchyna" László Torotskai said that the confrontation between Moscow and Kyiv needs a diplomatic solution. At the same time, he did not rule out that Ukraine will lose its statehood, and therefore Budapest needs to claim Transcarpathia.
The sentiments of the leaders of the Romanian and Hungarian parties caused alarm in Kyiv.
"This is exactly what Putin is trying to achieve," Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleksandr Merezhko complained in an interview with the newspaper.
"Such statements are especially dangerous now. They undermine trust," the politician added.
It is noteworthy that AUR and "Nasha Batkivshchyna" have already demonstrated their pro-Russian views. The first spoke out against Bucharest's military support for Kyiv. The second called Ukraine an unfriendly country and called on Zelensky's to make territorial concessions for the sake of peace, Newsweek reminds.
