Berlin is ready to join the new round of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia - this time in the Vatican. This was stated by the German Prescribe of Germany Stefan Cornellius, reports the Italian edition of Repubblica .
According to the spokesman, the German government is positive about the idea of attracting Pope Lion XIV as a potential mediator in negotiations. At the same time, Cornelius stressed that the geography of the meeting is not the main thing.
"Negotiations in the Vatican? The main thing is that the negotiations are serious," he said.
Cornelius stressed that a true peaceful dialogue requires careful preparation and presence of participants who have real powers to make decisions to cease fire.
In addition, the German government spokesman noted that EU countries continue to coordinate their actions with the United States to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation. This is happening against the background of new US Congress initiatives on the Kremlin's economic pressure.
We will remind, on May 19 more than a two -hour telephone conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin took place. The main theme was the possible "peace plan" for Ukraine. After the conversation, Trump stated that negotiations between Kiev and Moscow are “to start immediately”, although he does not plan to strengthen sanctions.
It also became known that Trump communicated twice with President Vladimir Zelensky - before and after talking to Putin. During the second conversation, European leaders joined the dialogue.
The fact that Trump remained "relatively satisfied" of heard from the Russian dictator caused anxiety in Europe. Washington does not reject the idea of direct negotiations of Ukraine with Russia, but at this stage are not ready to increase sanction pressure.
