US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the future of Ukraine is under serious threat due to the ongoing war and mass emigration of the population. He said this in an interview with American journalist Megyn Kelly.
Rubio noted that the war in Ukraine has dragged on. He believes that negotiations and concessions are needed from both sides.
“Ukraine has been set back 100 years, and its future is at risk because of millions of citizens who have left abroad,” Rubio noted.
He also accused the administration of former US President Joe Biden of misleading Kyiv by convincing it that Ukraine could “return to the way it was in 2012 or 2014 – before the Russians took Crimea.”.
“There is one lie – we were told that Ukraine would not only be able to defeat Russia, but also destroy it, completely pushing it back to the borders of 2012 or 2014, to Crimea and other territories,” he said.
At the same time, Rubio stated that the reality is this: for a year and a half, Ukraine has been requesting funding to support a deadlocked, protracted conflict.
“From the president’s (Donald Trump’s – ed.) perspective, this is a long-running conflict and it needs to be ended,” Rubio noted, adding that both Ukraine and Russia have to make concessions.
