On May 21, the former Ukrainian politician Andrei Portnov, the scandalous existing head of the Presidential Administration Viktor Yanukovych, was shot in the Spanish capital of Madrid.
About it reports Reuters with reference to sources in law enforcement agencies of Spain. The murder happened at about 9 am in the elite suburb of Posuelo de Alarkon, near the American school, where the children came.
According to witnesses, Portnov was fired five times, after which the attackers disappeared. According to preliminary data, two or three people could be involved in the attempt. Police do not exclude the planned nature of the crime, given that the shooting took place in a public place.
Andriy Portnov held the position of Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Yanukovych in 2011–2014. After the Revolution of Dignity, he left Ukraine: initially left for Russia, and later to Austria. In recent years, according to journalists, he lived or permanently in Spain.
Portnov publicly supported Antimaidan, actively advocated the Amnesty of Golden Security officers, as well as known for threats to journalists and activists.
In 2021, the SBU opened proceedings for the State Education Council, and he also appeared in investigations into illegal enrichment.
Spanish police officially do not voice the version of the motives of murder, but the main hypotheses are political order. Personal or criminal motives are also considered.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has not yet provided official comment. The SBU also did not comment on Portnov's death.
The death of one of Yanukovych's most odious representatives, which has been outside Ukraine for a long time, may have international resonance, taking into account the circumstances of the attempt and the place of its commission.
