The head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko, appealed to the management of the M.M. Hryshko National Botanical Garden and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine with a call to immediately terminate the investment agreement concluded in 2018. This agreement provides for the development of part of the botanical garden territory, which caused a significant resonance among the public.
Official position of the KMVA
In his address, Tkachenko emphasized that the botanical garden is an integral part of Ukraine's natural heritage and must remain preserved for future generations.
"The National Botanical Garden is an asset that should be left as a legacy for future generations. I hope that the termination of this agreement will take place in the near future," he said.
Tkachenko also thanked the State Audit Service for identifying this issue and emphasized the administration's readiness to protect the botanical garden from possible destruction due to development.
“No commercial benefit can be a reason to violate the status of the botanical garden as a natural heritage of the country,” he added.
Situation details
According to the State Audit Service, an investment agreement was signed in 2018, which provided for the development of part of the botanical garden territory. This decision contradicts the status of the botanical garden, which is part of the nature reserve fund of Ukraine.
The Botanical Garden is an object of national importance, which provides a special regime of protection, reproduction and use in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On the Nature Reserve Fund of Ukraine”.
The news of the possible development has sparked outrage among Kyiv residents and environmental activists. They are demanding the immediate termination of the contract and strengthened measures to protect the botanical garden area.
