This summer, Ukraine may experience power outages in the evenings. This was stated by People's Deputy Serhiy Nagornyak on the air of the Kyiv 24 TV channel, Glavkom reports.
The cause of the potential shortage could be a repair campaign at nuclear power units.
"Some of the nuclear power units are going into cooling mode. They will be undergoing repairs. There will be less generation," explained Nagornyak.
During the day, the situation is somewhat balanced by generation from solar power plants, but it is the evening hours that remain the most vulnerable.
"Therefore, there is a significant probability that on hot days, in the evening hours, we will have a slight deficit. And the only option to avoid it is to increase imports," the deputy added.
In response to media publications about possible power outages, Ukrenergo denied rumors about the return of restriction schedules:
"In recent days, some media outlets and Telegram channels have begun publishing news with clickbait headlines about the possible return of outages. We would like to note that the information being disseminated is unreliable," the company noted.
At the same time, Ukrenergo called for reducing consumption to minimize risks during peak hours.
Another problem that affects system stability is imperfect pricing mechanisms in the electricity market.
Experts warn that current price restrictions prevent effective imports from EU countries. This creates additional risks to energy security, especially in the summer, when demand increases due to air conditioning and reduced production at thermal and nuclear power plants.
