Active discussions are ongoing in Ukraine regarding the possible lowering of the age of mobilization to 20 years. This initiative is supported by some politicians and experts, arguing that it could be an important step to strengthen the country's defense capabilities in the face of a military conflict with Russia.
"If the Constitution stipulates that a person can become a people's deputy at the age of 21, then he can definitely become a soldier at the age of 20," said Roman Kostenko, secretary of the National Security Committee.
According to the people's deputy and the military, he was pushed to make statements on this topic by congressmen in private conversations.
Kostenko said that the Americans have doubts about the problems with mobilization in Ukraine.
"There is a war for independence, you fight, we give weapons. You say that you have problems with mobilization. Why is it that in all countries they draft from the age of 18, and in your country from the age of 25? So you have no problem with mobilization. Or are you afraid to make drastic decisions," Kostenko recounts his conversations with his American colleagues.
At the same time, according to the politician, lowering the mobilization age is "not a radical decision" and he is in favor of it.
Earlier, OP already reported that the States are putting pressure on Ukraine to lower the bar for mobilization to 18 years.
Zelensky later confirmed this.
