In 2024, a significant decrease in the number of new marriages and an increase in divorces was noted in Ukraine, as well as an increase in the popularity of marriage contracts. This follows from data released by the Opendatabot platform.
Reduction in the Number of Marriages
According to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, during the first six months of 2024, 72,766 new marriages were concluded. This is 15% less than in the same period last year, and a third less than before the start of the big war in 2022. Interestingly, after a significant wedding boom in the first year of the full-scale invasion, the number of marriages gradually decreased, and this year it was the lowest since the beginning of the war.
More Marriage Contracts
Despite the decrease in the number of marriages, Ukrainians have become more aware of the issues of legal regulation of their relationships. In 2024, 3,768 marriage contracts were concluded, which is 25% more than in the corresponding period last year. This trend indicates the growing popularity of legal protection of personal and financial interests in marriage.
The capital of Ukraine remains the leader in the number of new marriages, with 9,392 new families registered in Kyiv. Dnipropetrovsk region ranks second with 7,076 marriages, and Odesa region rounded out the top three with 4,896 new families.
Growth of Divorce
Against the background of a decrease in the number of new marriages, there is a significant increase in divorces. In the first six months of 2024, 15,578 divorces were registered, which is one and a half times more than in the same period last year, and 18% more than in the first half of 2021.
Kyiv leads the number of divorces with 2,118 divorces, followed by Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with 1,404 divorces and Kharkiv Oblast with 1,148 divorces. Zakarpattia Oblast still has the lowest number of divorces – 224, and Chernivtsi Oblast shows the lowest rate of new marriages – 1,376 this year.
