Over the past year, the price of white -headed cabbage in Ukraine has increased 2.5 times. If last year a kilogram cost 17.5 UAH, now the cost has overcome the mark of 33 UAH. Such a jump is associated with a lean year, and, according to forecasts, prices can continue growth.
According to Tatiana Popovich, the head of the marketing department of the Lviv market "Shuvar", the rising prices were influenced by adverse weather conditions and drought. Farmers report a significant reduction in the supply of cabbage, which does not have time to meet high demand.
"Cabbage demand remains stable because it is an indispensable ingredient for traditional Ukrainian dishes, such as borscht or salads," Popovich notes.
Experts predict that reducing stocks in storage facilities will lead to a further rise in price. Import cabbage may come to the market, most likely from Poland, but prices should not be expected before the new collection season - at the end of April or early May.
Supermarkets hold a brand but prices bite
Currently, the cost of white cabbage in Ukrainian supermarkets varies significantly:
- "Fora" - 41.90 UAH/kg
- ATB - 43.89 UAH/kg
- Metro - 42.90 UAH/kg
- Auchan - 42.90 UAH/kg
- Novus - 46.99 UAH/kg
- Varus - 44.90 UAH/kg
The average price of cabbage in supermarkets, according to the Ministry of Finance, is 48.10 UAH/kg.
Despite high prices, demand for cabbage remains constant. Farmers do not record a significant decrease in purchases, as vegetables are an important component of the diet of Ukrainians.
