The year 2024 was marked by a significant increase in prices for bread and other food products in Ukraine. The main reasons were the increase in the price of raw materials, electricity and logistics. However, experts predict that the increase in bread prices will be gradual, although the upward trend will continue.
How did bread become more expensive?
- Wheat bread (high grade flour) : +13.2%, now costs UAH 49.90/kg.
- Wheat bread (first grade flour) : +14.2%, up to UAH 40.81/kg.
- Rye bread : +14.1%, the price increased to UAH 42.67/kg.
- Baguette (500 grams) : increased in price by 14% and now costs UAH 26.26.
Svetlana Cheremisina, a scientist at the Institute of Agrarian Economics, noted that since autumn, the components of bread production have also become more expensive:
- Flour : +2.8%, now UAH 18.66/kg.
- Sunflower oil : +3.3%, up to UAH 65.02/kg.
- Sugar : the only product that fell in price (-4.4%), now costs UAH 33.55/kg.
In 2024, Ukraine faced a shortage of potatoes due to a poor harvest, which significantly increased vegetable prices and increased imports. Turkey, Poland and the Netherlands became the main suppliers of potatoes.
It is expected that in 2025, the Ukrainian market will partially stabilize due to the growth of domestic production of most vegetables. However, global market conditions and energy costs will remain key factors affecting prices.
