According to the new Julian calendar, Orthodox Christians today honor the holy great martyr and healer Panteleimon of Nicomedia. On this day, it is customary to pray for healing from illnesses, both physical and spiritual. Panteleimon is considered the patron saint of doctors, soldiers, and all who struggle with ailments.
According to the old style, on July 27, the fathers of the six Ecumenical Councils are commemorated.
Medic's Day in Ukraine
In Ukraine, this holiday has been officially considered Medic's Day since 2023. It was moved from June to July 27, the day of memory of Saint Panteleimon. Today, it is customary to congratulate doctors, nurses, paramedics and everyone involved in healthcare - to thank them for their selfless work, especially in times of war.
International holiday
Grandparents Day is celebrated all over the world on July 27th, a day of family warmth, when grandchildren should call or visit their older relatives. Also on the calendar today are Hamburger Day and Stilt Walking Day.
Folk traditions
The people celebrated Panteleimon's Day on July 27. It was believed that on this day, healing herbs acquire special power, so they were actively collected. Young potatoes, onions, and cabbage were collected from the gardens and soups were prepared, believing that they would bring health.
This day was considered auspicious for treatment, hardening the body, and starting wellness procedures.
