The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets, reported that almost 37,000 people actually went missing in Ukraine. This category includes children, civilians and military personnel, but Lubinets said the real number could be much higher.
It is noted that among these persons, about 1,700 have been verified by Ukraine and the International Committee of the Red Cross and by other means as illegally detained by Russia.
The exact number of missing persons is difficult to establish due to the fact that Russian forces still control part of the country's territory, as well as the lack of regular publication of data on losses from the parties to the conflict.
The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, according to data for March 2024, confirmed the death of 10,810 civilians and the wounding of 20,556 as a result of Russia's two-year invasion of Ukraine. However, the organization believes that the real number of victims among the civilian population may be much higher.
