Vasyl, Melania and the Old New Year: holidays and traditions of the day

Today is a day filled with traditions, holidays, and historical events. It is the date when Ukrainians celebrate Shchedry Vecher (Generous Evening) and the world celebrates Rubber Duck Day. Find out what is special about this day and what prohibitions and signs are associated with it.

Church holidays

According to the new style, January 13 is the day of remembrance of Saints Yermil, Stratonicus of Syngidon, and the martyr Peter of Ania. According to the old style, Saint Melania of Rome and Saint Basil the Great are honored. Ukrainian ancestors respected these saints and believed that their prayers contributed to well-being.

Generous evening

Generous Evening or the Feast of Basil and Melanka is a unique combination of Christian and pagan traditions. On this evening, Ukrainians prepare generous kutia, sow seeds for their neighbors, wishing for prosperity, and organize fun costumed performances with the characters of Melanka, Basil, and the Goat.

The holiday coincides with the Old New Year, a remnant of the Julian calendar. Although Ukraine now follows the Gregorian calendar, the tradition of celebrating the “old” New Year remains popular.

World holidays

January 13th has its own unique events in the world. Among them:

  • World Depression Day is a reminder of the importance of mental health.
  • Rubber Duck Day is a celebration of a children's toy that has become a symbol of fun.
  • Father's Day in Islam is a celebration of the role of fathers in Muslim families.

On this day, the following were born:

  • Jan van Goyen is a Dutch painter, master of landscape.
  • François Mansard was a French architect who popularized attics.
  • Orlando Bloom and Liam Hemsworth are actors known for their roles in Hollywood films.
  • Connor McDavid is a world hockey star.

In Ukraine, this day became the birthday of prominent figures such as chemist Mykola Beketov, journalist Yevhen Onatsky, and aviator Levko Matsievych.

Prohibitions and signs

To avoid trouble, on January 13th you cannot:

  • To quarrel or insult others.
  • Harming cats - they are considered the patrons of the home on this day.

Signs indicate:

  • If it gets warmer, the frosts will soon recede.
  • Frost on trees - to a fruitful year.
  • The south wind promises a hot summer.

Angel Day

Today, Panas, Petro, Maksym, Yakiv celebrate their name days, and according to the old style, Melania, Mykhailo, and Petro.

January 13 is a day full of traditions, beliefs, and memories of important events. No matter what you celebrate — Generosity Night, Rubber Duck, or a name day — may this day bring joy and inspiration!
