According to the new style, January 13 is the day of remembrance of Saints Yermil, Stratonicus of Syngidon, and the martyr Peter of Ania. Generous Evening or the Feast of Basil and Melanka is a unique combination of Christian and pagan traditions. On this evening, Ukrainians prepare generous kutia, sow seeds for their neighbors, wishing for prosperity, and organize fun costumed performances with the characters of Melanka, Basil, and the Goat.
The holiday coincides with the Old New Year, a remnant of the Julian calendar. Although Ukraine now follows the Gregorian calendar, the tradition of celebrating the “old” New Year remains popular.
World holidays
