The digital transformation of education is an important stage in the development of the modern educational process. Digital technologies are already being actively implemented in Ukraine, however, as it turned out, many schools face problems that significantly slow down this process. The results of the SELFIE assessment of the digital readiness of educational institutions, conducted by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in 2024, showed important obstacles that need to be addressed.
SELFIE is an online tool for assessing the readiness of schools for digital changes, identifying areas for improvement and implementing innovative approaches. According to the results of the survey of teachers and heads of educational institutions, the biggest problems for digitization were:
- Lack of funding – this problem affects 68.37% of heads of educational institutions and 58.51% of teachers. Without adequate funding, the implementation of modern technologies in education becomes extremely difficult.
- Inadequate computer equipment – 54.02% of managers and 44.68% of teachers noted that the available computers are outdated and cannot effectively support the latest educational technologies.
- Unreliable Internet connection or slow speed – 46.78% of teachers and 41.41% of managers reported problems with Internet connection, especially in remote areas, making it difficult to access online resources.
- Lack of time for teachers - many educators note that they do not have enough time to master new digital tools, as the main working time is spent on preparing lessons and teaching students.
- Limited or no technical support – To be effective, teachers and school administrators need constant technical assistance, especially during the transition to new technologies.
Despite these problems, more and more schools in Ukraine are switching to electronic journals and other digital document management tools. For example, in Volyn, 90% of schools have already switched to e-journals, which greatly simplifies document management and data storage.
Also, teachers and students actively use artificial intelligence in the educational process. The study of the Ministry of Education and Culture showed that 76% of teachers and 85% of schoolchildren used AI technologies for learning at least once, which indicates a high level of interest in the latest educational technologies.
Thus, although digitalization of education faces numerous challenges, efforts are already being made to support its implementation at various levels, which allows us to hope for positive changes in the future.
