The Verkhovna Rada increased the number of the Border Service

The Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on increasing the number of the State Border Service (SPSU) by 15,000 servicemen.

327 People's Deputies voted for Law No. 11091. This means that within a year from the date of termination or cancellation of martial law, the number of the State Security Service will increase to 75,000 people, including 67,000 military personnel.

In the explanatory note to the law, it is noted that the increase in the number of DPSU is necessary for the formation and increase of combat reserves. It would also allow the service to take control of the state border for its effective post-war protection.

An increase in the number of DPSU by 15,000 is expected for:

  • formation of border detachments according to a new organizational and staffing structure (brigade type);
  • implementation of a new model of state border protection in de-occupied areas and in the event of liberation of temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions;
  • readiness to restore the border after the complete liberation of all temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including Crimea.
