A military official stole over UAH 10 million in purchases for "defense"

The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of Ukraine announced the disclosure of a corruption scheme in one of the military units engaged in procurement for the country's defense. According to the results of the investigation, it was established that the head of the Mykolaiv apartment management department, together with a private entrepreneur, appropriated more than 10 million hryvnias intended for defense needs.

It was established that in September 2023, the official concluded a number of contracts with a private enterprise for the purchase of firewood to meet defense needs. Wood was supplied at a 20% higher price than the market price.

According to the scheme, state money was deposited into the company's account, and the "markup" for the goods was shared between the conspirators. The total amount of damages reached almost 10 million hryvnias.

Currently, the official has been notified of suspicion of abuse of official position (Part 2 of Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, measures are being taken to compensate the state for damages.

The issue of choosing a preventive measure for the official in the form of detention and removal from office is being resolved. Work is also ongoing on the notification of suspicion to the entrepreneur.

The sanction of the article provides for a punishment of up to 6 years of imprisonment.
