Anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency develops slowly and insidiously. The body gradually adapts to the reduced number or poor quality of red blood cells, which is why symptoms may seem mild or imperceptible at the beginning of the disease.
However, doctors from one of the world's leading healthcare companies, MSD, warn that there are three particularly dangerous symptoms that indicate a critical deficiency of vitamin B12. These are:
-
dizziness
-
dyspnea
-
rapid heartbeat
These symptoms are often confused with other diseases, making it difficult to make a correct diagnosis. However, early detection of the cause is critical, as advanced anemia can cause damage to the nervous system.
A B12 deficiency can cause tingling or numbness in the hands and feet. This can eventually lead to loss of coordination and mobility. Another serious risk is the development of dementia and cognitive decline.
The only reliable way to detect a vitamin deficiency is a blood test. If a deficiency is detected, the patient is prescribed high doses of B12 in the form of injections or tablets.
In most cases, the symptoms of anemia disappear after treatment. However, if nerve tissue damage has already occurred, the effects may be irreversible.
Doctors urge not to ignore alarming symptoms and to regularly undergo basic examinations, especially if there is chronic fatigue or disorders of the heart or nervous system.
