Vitamin C deficiency may block weight loss — study

Vitamin C, traditionally associated with preventing colds, plays a much more important role in the body than previously thought. New scientific evidence suggests that a deficiency in ascorbic acid can significantly inhibit fat burning and disrupt metabolism.

Experts explain that the key mechanism of action of vitamin C is associated with the synthesis of carnitine, a compound that ensures the transport of fatty acids into the mitochondria, where they are converted into energy. With a lack of this vitamin, fat is not used by the body, but accumulates, even with physical activity and limited nutrition.

In addition to participating in fat metabolism, vitamin C has a positive effect on the blood lipid profile, helping to reduce low-density cholesterol levels, and also reduces chronic inflammatory processes that often accompany excess weight and provoke fluid retention in the tissues.

Researchers pay special attention to the detoxification properties of ascorbic acid. Vitamin C is able to bind and remove heavy metals from the body, in particular lead, which can accumulate due to polluted air or contact with poor-quality materials. In combination with calcium and iron, it forms a natural protective barrier against intoxication, which is especially important for residents of large cities.

Doctors note that vitamin C deficiency is much more common in overweight people. This creates a vicious circle: increased oxidative stress reduces insulin sensitivity, and a lack of ascorbic acid makes it impossible to burn fat effectively.

To maintain normal levels of vitamin C, it is not necessary to immediately resort to pharmacological supplements. A diet rich in citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, broccoli and sauerkraut can provide the body with the necessary amount of this nutrient. Experts also advise combining plant sources of iron with foods containing vitamin C, as this significantly improves its absorption.

Experts emphasize that the need for vitamin C increases during periods of stress, active physical activity, and chronic fatigue. When healthy fats are present in the diet, it works more effectively, supporting not only immunity but also a healthy metabolism.
