Despite the growing popularity of vitamin supplements, not all of them are safe. Nutritionists warn that careless use of supplements can be just as harmful to health as ultra-processed foods.
Experts say that taking too many vitamins can be dangerous. Dietitian Carol Granger explained that while some supplements are beneficial, others can be harmful if taken regularly in large amounts.
Nutritionist Aimee Benbow advises reading the ingredients of vitamins carefully and paying attention to the form: capsules usually contain fewer synthetic components than tablets. The expert also warns against white tablets, as they may contain titanium dioxide, a substance banned in the EU.
Another risk is overdose. According to the BBC, some popular supplements promoted by influencers can contain 5-10 times the recommended daily allowance of vitamins. Too much vitamin D can cause seizures and coma, while too much vitamin A can cause intoxication, pain, and even death.
Experts say the best way to get the vitamins you need is through a healthy diet and an active lifestyle. However, according to Superdrug Niamh Macmillan, most supplements undergo rigorous testing before being put on the market, so not all of them are dangerous.
