The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, expressed his positive perspective regarding the future demographic development of the country. During a meeting with students of Sumy State University, he expressed his belief that after the end of the war in Ukraine, a demographic "boom" will follow.
When asked by a student about state programs aimed at stimulating birth rates, the Ukrainian leader replied that the number one issue is safety.
"I think the biggest incentive is safety, and what's next with the child, and what to do. And it is necessary not only to stimulate financially, because, in my opinion, finances help, but they do not stimulate to give birth during the war," said Zelenskyy.
The President emphasized the need for shelters in schools and kindergartens, as well as air defense systems.
"That is, what the state should do with its partners is the latest technologies for air defense and its domestic systems. And to inform society about it. But you are smart, you see for yourself if they shoot, and if it does not fall and it goes astray - then this indicates that we have a sufficient number of mobile fire groups and air defense systems. If it arrives, it means that there is no security from the sky yet," the president said.
According to him, it also affects the birth rate.
"I understand that the war will end - there will be a boom. I am sure of this, people will return, they will be confident in tomorrow, confident in the future and in Ukraine," Zelensky emphasized.
- On July 31, 2023, it was reported that the birth rate in Ukraine has decreased by 28% since the beginning of the full-scale war. This is the biggest decline for the entire time of the country's independence.
- On February 23, 2024, the Ministry of Health announced that the birth rate in Ukraine has been falling by approximately 7% per year since 2013.
