The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, expressed his readiness to hold presidential elections even during the war, if the necessary changes in legislation and voting conditions are made.
In an interview with the British television channel Channel 4 News, he noted that it is necessary to consider the possibility of changing the laws and circumstances, if it will help in the organization of elections .
"Here is my answer to you: if I could do it tomorrow, I would do it tomorrow... We need to change the circumstances and the law ," Zelensky said, answering a question about the possibility of elections that should be held in the spring of this year.
The President emphasized that the decision to postpone the elections was made in accordance with the law and not because of his personal wishes. The law prohibits holding elections during martial law.
"I am simply unable to conduct them because of the law, which forbids me to do so. That is, he forbids me not to hold elections, but forbids elections in general for all institutions," Zelenskyi explained.
The president also pointed to the problems with holding elections in the occupied territories and for Ukrainians abroad, as the lack of an online election format is becoming a challenge.
In November 2023, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine reported that it had not received information about the possibility of preparing for the presidential elections in March 2024, and according to the Constitution, elections are not held during martial law.
