President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his readiness to hold presidential elections even during wartime, if the necessary changes are made to the legislation and voting conditions.
In an interview with the British television channel Channel 4 News, he noted that it is necessary to consider the possibility of changing laws and circumstances if this will help in organizing the elections .
“Here’s my answer: if I could do it tomorrow, I would do it tomorrow… We need to change the circumstances and the law ,” Zelensky said, answering a question about the possibility of elections, which should be held in the spring of this year.
The President emphasized that the decision to postpone the elections is made in accordance with the law and not out of his personal wishes. The law prohibits holding elections during martial law.
"I simply cannot hold them because of the law that prohibits me from doing so. That is, it does not prohibit me from holding elections, but it prohibits all institutions in general from holding elections," Zelensky explained.
The President also pointed to problems with holding elections in the occupied territories and for Ukrainians abroad, as the lack of an online election format is becoming a challenge.
In November 2023, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine reported that it had not received information about the possibility of preparing for the presidential elections in March 2024, and according to the Constitution, elections are not held during martial law.
