The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed new cases of infection with the Oropush virus, which poses a serious threat to public health. The disease was recorded in Ecuador, Guyana, Panama and the Cayman Islands. In addition, cases of importation of the virus were detected in Canada, the United States and European countries, which causes concern for medical organizations.
- Based on available information, WHO assesses the overall public health risk posed by this virus as high at the regional level. 30 cases of the disease have been registered in Europe, the report says.
As it became known, the disease develops due to midge bites. The WHO fears that the virus may begin to spread in other ways if it is not brought under control.
In addition, the deaths of 15 babies in Brazil, five miscarriages and three cases of congenital anomalies are currently being investigated. Also in September, Cuba confirmed a case of congenital anomaly, two more cases are under investigation.
At the same time, three imported cases of Oropush were found in Germany, 21 cases in Spain, and six cases in Italy. In particular, 20 of these cases are related to trips to Cuba, and one to Brazil.
