President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky gave the team a signal to start preparing for the national elections after reaching a full ceasefire. About it reports The Economist with reference to sources in the Ukrainian government. If the situation on the front allows, the elections can take place in early July 2025.
According to sources, last week the President convened a special meeting, during which he gave a clear order to start organizational work. The first signal of the possible election can be the decision of the Parliament on May 5 - it is then that the Verkhovna Rada should determine the further fate of martial law, the validity of which appears on May 8.
In the case of its abolition, the legal opportunity will be opened to begin the electoral process, as the Constitution now prohibits elections during martial law.
By law, the election campaign should last at least 60 days, so the earliest possible voting day is the beginning of July. At the same time, some sources indicate that it may take at least three months to properly organize elections, including updating voter lists.
Sources in the government also hint at political motivation - the fast start of the campaign will give Zelensky the opportunity to take advantage of their current rating and not give opponents enough time to prepare. One of the high -ranking officials to whom The Economist , directly says that there was a long election struggle in the current environment "to break the country into parts." In his opinion, fast elections are stability.
Information about the possible ceasefire appeared in the publication of Bloomberg : according to their data, the United States is considering a scenario of stopping hostilities for Easter, which this year falls on April 20.
Interestingly, against the backdrop of these discussions, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to introduce "Temporary Management under the auspices of the UN" on the night of March 27 to March 28 for elections. This statement caused a sharp reaction to the West. The White House emphasized that only the Constitution of Ukraine and its citizens have the right to determine when and how the elections will take place - therefore, the Kremlin's proposal was rejected.
There is currently no official announcement of the upcoming elections, but political activity around this topic is increasing. Ukraine may be at the threshold of a new political stage in the coming summer - if, of course, the war will at least temporarily stop.
