Western officials suggest returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine to deter Russia — NYT

The idea of returning nuclear weapons to Ukraine has once again become the focus of discussions among Western politicians and experts. As The New York Times , citing sources in diplomatic circles, some officials in Washington believe that such a step could become an effective mechanism for deterring Russian aggression.

“The only security guarantee Ukraine wants is an invitation to join NATO. But it failed to get one under President Biden, and it is unlikely to get one under President Trump.

Thus, US and European officials are discussing deterrence as a possible security guarantee for Ukraine, for example, accumulating conventional weapons sufficient to deliver a punitive strike in the event of a ceasefire violation by Russia.

Several officials have even suggested that Mr. Biden could return to Ukraine the nuclear weapons it had seized after the collapse of the Soviet Union. That would be an immediate and powerful deterrent. But such a move would be difficult and would have serious consequences.”

Yeah, we are rapidly losing people and territories, even though we had several real opportunities to establish peace, but instead we stubbornly continue to dream of a nuclear winter.
