What holiday is today: signs, traditions and prohibitions of the day

June 22 is a special date for Ukrainians. It is not associated with celebrations, because it was on this day in 1941 that the invasion of Nazi Germany began as part of World War II. Every year, Ukraine commemorates the millions who died during the war, because it was our country that suffered some of the greatest losses: about 8 million Ukrainians became victims of occupation, fighting, bombings, and repressions.

What church holiday is today?

According to the new Julian calendar, believers honor the memory of Bishop Eusebius of Samosata. According to the old style, on this day they remember Saint Cyril of Alexandria, one of the fathers of the church and Christian theologians.

Holidays in the world

Despite the tragic significance of this date for Ukrainians, in the world, June 22 is associated with a number of thematic holidays:

  • World Tropical Forest Day

  • Camel Protection Day

  • Chocolate Eclair Day

  • Volkswagen Beetle Day - the iconic car of the 20th century

Folk omens and prohibitions

Folk beliefs advise against starting serious business, including construction, moving, or investing. Instead, it is believed that this day is favorable for love relationships - weddings, dates, and reconciliation.

Old signs say:

  • It's cloudy - it will rain

  • Frogs croak - expect a thunderstorm

  • A spider weaves a web outside - to dry weather

  • The sun's heat means the winter will be harsh

What not to do today

The Church does not recommend:

  • curse

  • to wish evil

  • to insult others

These are universal moral precepts that are relevant any day.
