September 22, 2025 falls on several important dates - both for Ukraine and for the world.
Church holiday
Orthodox Christians remember the little prophet Jonah and Bishop Phocas of Sinop. Believers believe that it is to these saints that one can turn with a prayer for protection of a home from fire. According to the old style, on this day the parents of the Virgin Mary - Anna and Joachim - are honored.
Holiday in Ukraine
Ukraine celebrates Partisan Glory Day, a memorable date dedicated to the fighters of World War II who operated behind enemy lines. Today, the holiday has another dimension - it symbolically refers to modern heroes who resist the occupiers in the occupied territories.
Also, from September 22 to 24, Jews celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. In Ukraine, the main place of pilgrimage during these days is the city of Uman, where thousands of Hasidim gather.
Among the famous Ukrainians born on this day are linguist Oleksandr Potebnia, artist Borys Barsky, and diplomat Andriy Deshchytsia.
Holidays in the world
September 22 is traditionally celebrated as Car Free Day, which encourages people to switch to bicycles or public transport to reduce emissions. Also celebrated today are Elephant and Rhino Day, White Chocolate Day, Rose Day and Safer Internet Day.
Astronomically, this date marks the autumnal equinox, the moment when day and night are of equal length. From this time on, the days become shorter, symbolizing the beginning of astronomical autumn.
Among the world's famous birthday people are physicist and chemist Michael Faraday, mountaineer Tabei Junko, singer Andrea Bocelli, actor Tom Felton, and football player Cristiano Ronaldo.
Folk traditions
According to Ukrainian signs:
-
What an equinox – such will be the autumn;
-
a spider web between the trees portends late winter;
-
If the trees have already turned yellow, Indian summer is over.
This day was favorable for harvesting radishes, beets, and rutabagas. Our ancestors believed that eating a piece of radish on this day would bring good health.
Bans of the day
Church teachings prohibit lying, envy, quarrels, and revenge on this day. In folk tradition, one should not be lazy, as the holiday should be spent in work. Fishing and cooking fish dishes are also prohibited.
