February 24 will forever go down in Ukrainian history as the day of the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. It was on this day in 2022 that the troops of the aggressor country launched an open offensive, trying to capture the Ukrainian capital and establish control over the state. However, the plan for a quick occupation failed - Ukrainians united and demonstrated their indomitability and heroism to the world.
This year marks the fourth anniversary of the start of the Great War. Many cities are holding commemorative events to honor the fallen soldiers and civilians. Also, for the second year in a row, Ukraine is celebrating the National Day of Prayer. Prayers for Ukrainian soldiers are heard in churches, and clergy hold services and memorial services for the fallen defenders.
According to the modern Orthodox calendar, February 24 commemorates the first and second finding of the head of St. John the Baptist. It is customary for believers to ask the saint for healing, health for children, blessings for the family, and deliverance from bad habits. According to the old style, St. Blaise of Sebaste is also remembered on this day.
Several unofficial international events are celebrated around the world on February 24. Among them is World Bartender Day, dedicated to people who work in the hospitality industry and create signature drinks. This day is also commemorated as Lottery Day, Coriander Hatred Day, and Spay/Neuter Pet Day.
In the folk calendar, this date is associated with the expectation of spring. Our ancestors paid attention to signs: if many stars are visible at night, you should expect a cold snap; severe frosts promise a warm March; the appearance of starlings is considered a sign of early spring. Wet snow portends a thaw, and dry snow - further frosts. During this period, the owners began to prepare for field work, put the equipment in order, baked round loaves and pancakes as symbols of the sun.
At the same time, there are also prohibitions. In folk beliefs, it is believed that on February 24 one should not quarrel, be jealous, or abuse alcohol. It is recommended to break bread with hands, not cut with a knife. It is also not recommended to prune trees and bushes, so as not to harm the future harvest.
Thus, for Ukrainians, February 24 combines the memory of the tragic events of modern history, the spiritual understanding of war, and traditions preserved from ancient times.
