Church holidays December 28
In 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to the New Julian calendar, so many holidays are celebrated 13 days earlier.
- According to the new style :
December 28 commemorates the 20,000 martyrs of Nicomedia. At the beginning of the 4th century, during the persecutions of Emperor Maximian, Christians who gathered in a church for Christmas were locked up and burned alive. Among them were both clergy and ordinary believers. Their feat became a symbol of devotion to the faith. - Old Style :
Today is the memorial of Saint Stephen, Archbishop of Sourozh. He is known for his steadfastness in faith and service even during persecution.
Folk traditions and signs
People call December 28th the Christmas Carnivore's , because from this day until Lent, meat dishes are allowed to be eaten.
Signs of the day:
- The loud chirping of tits in the morning means severe frosts.
- If the day seems cold, there will be long frosts ahead.
- Red glare in the sky is a sign of upcoming snowfall.
What not to do:
- To curse, to quarrel, to be jealous, to be lazy.
- To refuse help to those who need it.
- Borrowing money or taking on debt can bring bad luck.
- Do crafts so as not to "mess up" your life.
What can be done:
- Pray for the health of loved ones, strengthening of faith, and peace.
- Invite guests and spend time with family.
- Prepare meat dishes, give warm things or sweets to older people.
- Remembering the good events of the year and making wishes with the whole family is believed to ensure that they will come true.
