Today is a day when Ukraine and the world celebrate several important dates at once, which have both historical and contemporary significance.
Every year on July 29, Ukraine honors the fallen soldiers of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This date is dedicated to the memory of the heroes-special forces who died while performing the most dangerous combat missions. Their work often remains unnoticed, but it is these soldiers who carry out missions that can be fatal for regular units - on the front line, in the rear, in the most difficult directions.
The International Day for Cultural Diversity and Anti-Discrimination is also celebrated on this day. It reminds us of the importance of respecting the cultures, traditions, views, lifestyles and languages of other people. Fighting discrimination is about protecting the fundamental rights of every person, regardless of their origin, beliefs or identity.
Another important date is International Tiger Day, which draws attention to the problem of the extinction of these big cats. Tigers are threatened by poaching, deforestation and the destruction of their habitat. Campaigns on this day are aimed at preserving the species and restoring populations in the wild.
On July 29, believers remember the holy martyr Kalynik. According to legend, he was a pagan, but after converting to Christianity, he became a wandering preacher. Kalynik was captured, tortured, and executed for his faith, and he became an example of fortitude and strength of conviction.
Significant events have taken place on July 29 in different years throughout history. Here are just a few of them:
-
238 - in Rome, the Praetorians seize the imperial palace;
-
615 - 12-year-old Pacal the Great ascends the throne in Palenque;
-
1836 - The Arc de Triomphe is opened in Paris;
-
1948 - The XIV Summer Olympic Games open in London;
-
1958 — NASA was established in the USA;
-
2002 — the tragic Sknylivka plane crash in Lviv, which killed 77 people.
And in 2022, a record-breaking short day was recorded - the Earth rotated around its axis faster than usual, by 1.59 milliseconds. Scientists believe the Chandler oscillation phenomenon is the likely cause.
