What holiday is December 30 today and what did our ancestors advise us to do?

December 30 has long been considered a special day, closely associated with New Year's Eve chores and summing up the year. In folk tradition, it had its own customs and signs, and in the church calendar it is dedicated to the honor of a Christian martyr. At the same time, several thematic and informal holidays are celebrated around the world on this day.

What holiday is today in Ukraine?

There are no official public holidays in Ukraine on December 30. This day is traditionally perceived as a preparatory day for the New Year — a time to finish chores, clean the house, and plan the festive table.

Among the famous Ukrainians born on this day are artist Svyatoslav Gordynsky, actor and comedian Andriy Sova, bandur player Nazar Voloshchuk, and actress Irma Vitovska.

What holiday is it in the world today?

Internationally, International Indian Cinema Day is celebrated on December 30. Indian cinema is known worldwide for its colorful costumes, musical numbers, fusion of genres, and focus on family values.

Also, in different countries, Baking Soda Day, Bacon Day, and Last Minute Change Day are celebrated on this day.

What church holiday is today?

According to the new church calendar, the Great Martyr Anisia of Thessaloniki is commemorated on December 30. She became famous for her selflessness, ascetic life, and spiritual purity.

According to the old calendar, which the Orthodox Church of Ukraine abandoned in 2023, on this day the Venerable Daniel and the youths Misail, Ananias, and Azariah were commemorated.

What is the national holiday today?

Among the people, December 30 was a day of observing the weather and preparing for winter holidays. Our ancestors believed that the signs of this day could tell what the weather would be like by the end of winter. They said that frost on trees portends a quick warming, increasing frost - a cold January, and if the rivers are covered with ice, it will last until mid-March. The south wind was considered a sign of approaching warmth.

In the evening of this day, the family would gather for a joint dinner. Hearty dishes, especially pork, were placed on the table, believing that such food would bring prosperity to the house and protect against diseases. Peasants often slaughtered pigs and geese, preparing meat for the Generous Evening. For financial well-being, there was a custom to put a coin in your pocket in the morning and carry it with you all day.

What not to do today

On this day, it was not recommended to do needlework, so as not to cause pain in the hands. It was forbidden to take revenge, wish evil on others, and communicate closely with sick people. It was also considered undesirable to invite strangers to the house or accept gifts from them, so as not to bring misfortune into the home.
