What holiday do we celebrate on September 5 and what can't be done today?

Friday, September 5, is not an official weekend or public holiday in Ukraine, but this date has special significance in the folk and church calendar.

Church holiday

According to the new style, Christians today remember Zacharias and Elizabeth, the parents of John the Baptist. It is believed that praying to these saints helps childless couples receive blessings for children. Also on this day, women named Elizabeth are congratulated on Angel Day. According to the old style, September 5 is associated with the memory of the martyr Lupp of Thessalonica.

Holidays in the world

Internationally, September 5 is the International Day of Charity, established by the UN. On this day, people are encouraged to do good deeds, including donating money to charity or becoming blood donors.
An informal holiday, Lazy Mom's Day, is gaining popularity on social networks, designed to remind women of the importance of rest after giving birth.
In addition, today the world celebrates Travel Journalists Day, Myeloma Day, Amazon River Day, Psychoanalyst Day, and even Cheese Pizza Day.

Folk signs and traditions

In ancient times, our ancestors considered this day auspicious for conception, weddings, and childbirth - such a marriage or birth brought happiness. Cleaning the house and going to the bathhouse were mandatory, because cleanliness was considered a guarantee of blessings.
According to signs:

  • if the cranes and storks have already flown away, expect early frosts;

  • low-flying birds portend a warm winter;

  • the loud croaking of frogs near rivers - to bad weather;

  • Birdsong - to the long Indian summer.

What can't be done

On this day, it was especially important not to lie or slander - it was believed that any deception would be revealed. It was also forbidden to share plans, make wishes, or tell secrets. People were advised to be restrained in their words in order to avoid trouble.

Famous birthdays

Famous Ukrainians were born on September 5: UNR soldier Volodymyr Sikevych, artist and sculptor Mykhailo Havrylko, film director Oleksandr Denysenko, gymnast Tetiana Gutsu, and hockey player Serhiy Babynets.
Philosopher Tommaso Campanella, composers Johann Christian Bach and John Cage, artist Caspar Friedrich, actress Raquel Welch, singer Freddie Mercury, and actor Michael Keaton were born on this day.
