The fifth day of February in Ukraine combines several important events at once - a professional holiday for the military, a significant church date, and an international informal holiday known far beyond the country's borders.
In Ukraine, February 5 is officially celebrated as the Day of the State Special Transport Service. This is a professional holiday for military personnel responsible for the functioning and restoration of transport infrastructure. These units ensure the construction and repair of bridges, railways, crossings and other strategic facilities, often working under shelling and power outages. Their work is critically important for the logistics of the Armed Forces and the country's life support.
The church calendar for February 5, according to the new style, is dedicated to the veneration of the martyr Agathia of Sicily, Saint Theodosius of Chernihiv, and the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Yeletsko-Chernihiv". Previously, according to the old style, the martyrs Clement and Agathangel were venerated on this day. Believers are recommended to spend the day in prayer, as the Yeletsko-Chernihiv icon is considered especially powerful in healing serious illnesses, in particular cancer, as well as in reconciling families and resolving protracted conflicts.
Internationally, February 5 is celebrated as World Nutella Day. The holiday of the popular nut paste unites millions of sweet tooths around the world every year. On this day, dessert fans prepare sweets using it or experiment with home recipes, allowing themselves to deviate from dietary restrictions.
In addition, the world also celebrates Optimist Day, Erudition Day, Monarch Butterfly Day, and the informal "It's Time to Talk" Day.
In the folk calendar, February 5 was considered the day of cooling. Our ancestors paid attention to the behavior of animals, trying to predict the weather and harvest. Special attention was paid to cattle on this day - cows were fed with vegetables stored since autumn, considering this a sign of prosperity. Housewives baked bread, blessed it in church and shared it with their family, believing that it would bring health for the whole year.
There are certain prohibitions associated with this day. It is considered inappropriate to quarrel, swear, show greed, or sort things out. It is not recommended to insult animals or kick them out of the house. According to popular beliefs, refusing to give alms to the needy on February 5 can result in financial difficulties for the refuser.
