What holiday is celebrated on January 7 in Ukraine and the world?

January 7 is a date that combines several religious, professional, and folk events. After the calendar reform of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, this number continues to be symbolic for many believers, and also has its own significance in secular and folk calendars.

In 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine switched to the new Julian calendar. Previously, according to the old style, Christmas was celebrated on January 7. Now Christmas in Ukraine is celebrated on December 25, and January 7, according to the new church calendar, is the feast of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

On this day, believers pray to John the Baptist, asking for harmony in the family, marital fidelity, children's health and well-being. The day is considered favorable for the baptism of infants, as well as for spiritual purification and reconciliation in the family.

The world celebrates International Programmer's Day on January 7, a professional holiday for IT professionals. In the modern world, without their work, the functioning of businesses, services, and digital systems is impossible, so on this day, IT professionals are traditionally congratulated and wished for professional success. In addition, there are less well-known thematic days in the world related to mentoring, philately, cooking, and science.

In Ukraine, there is no national holiday on January 7, but the date has cultural significance. Famous Ukrainian figures were born on this day - writer Mykola Arkas, literary critic Mykhailo Rudnytskyi, composer Anton Mukha, and film director Volodymyr Denysenko. Therefore, the day can be considered symbolic for Ukrainian culture and art.

In folk tradition, January 7 was associated with weather signs. It was believed that a blizzard on this day portends a cool summer, a sharp cold snap - a long cold spring, thick frost - a good grain harvest, and a starry sky - a generous mushroom season. The day was considered favorable for family affairs and prayer.

However, there were also prohibitions. People were advised not to transfer money, borrow money, or spend all the cash in their wallets, so as not to cause financial difficulties. Envy, condemnation of others, and imposing advice were prohibited. It was believed that violating these warnings could lead to losses and quarrels throughout the year.
