On August 17, the world celebrates several interesting dates at once. The most notable is World Black Cat Day, which was established to combat prejudice against these animals. Also celebrated today are Potato Day, Second Hand Day, and Custard Day.
Famous birthdays on this day include mathematician Pierre Fermat, Polish King Jan III Sobieski, Hollywood actors Robert De Niro and Sean Penn, and French footballer Thierry Henry.
Church holiday
The Orthodox Church commemorates the martyrs Myron the Presbyter, Paul, Juliania, and the icon painter Alapii of the Caves on this day. In the old style, it was the day of remembrance of the martyr Eudokia of Rome. Believers traditionally pray to Saint Alapii for spiritual stability and protection from sinful temptations.
In Ukraine
There are no official public holidays on the calendar for August 17. However, four famous Ukrainians were born on this day: artist Viktor Malinka, politician Ihor Smeshko, singer Andriy Kuzmenko (Kuzma Skryabin), and actress of Ukrainian origin Taisa Farmiga.
Folk traditions and omens
This day was popularly called “Widows’ Aid.” Peasants tried to help widows, orphans, and the needy, show concern for their neighbors, and avoid quarrels.
Signs on August 17 indicate:
-
rain promises a rich harvest of rye and wheat;
-
what is the weather today - this will be November;
-
dark clouds portend prolonged bad weather;
-
If the storks have already flown away, autumn will come early.
Also at this time, winter crops began to be sown and grain harvested.
That cannot be done today
This day was considered unfavorable for swearing, insults, envy, and revenge. It was not recommended to abuse alcohol, spread gossip, or make promises that could not be kept. There was also a belief that on August 17 one should not visit a cemetery or hold funeral ceremonies.
