Is Ukraine threatened by a nuclear disaster?

In the face of ongoing Russian aggression, the issues of nuclear safety and the risks of attacks on energy infrastructure remain extremely relevant. Despite concerns, nuclear energy experts emphasize that even in the event of a missile attack, the situation can be controlled.

Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Ludwig Litvinsky believes that the risk of a serious disaster similar to Chernobyl or Fukushima is minimal if the missile does not hit the power unit directly.

“Rocket attacks can cause damage to networks, power outages, or even a blackout. However, there will be no nuclear or radiation threat until a direct strike on a power unit occurs,” Lytvynskyi said on the Espresso TV channel.

The expert also emphasized that missiles, even without nuclear warheads, can be classified as unconventional weapons due to their destructive power.

This statement is supported by other experts who emphasize the danger of Russia's use of modern high-precision missiles capable of causing large-scale destruction even without a nuclear charge.

Discussions about the Kremlin's readiness to use nuclear weapons continue. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has expressed his belief that Vladimir Putin would not hesitate to use his nuclear arsenal if he finds himself in a desperate situation.

On the other hand, Viktor Yagun, a retired major general of the SBU, stressed that the state of Russia's nuclear weapons raises doubts. "No one has accurate data on the state of these warheads. This remains a mystery even for military experts," Yagun emphasized.
