On January 15th, Ukrainians celebrate several important dates at once - church, state, and international, and also remember folk traditions that have formed around this day over the centuries.
According to the new church calendar of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, on this day they honor St. Paul of Thebes, one of the first Christian hermits. Churches hold services during which believers pray for healing, protection from evil forces, the evil eye, and liberation from addictions. According to the old style, January 15 was also associated with the memory of Pope Sylvester and St. Seraphim of Sarov.
In Ukraine, this date also has professional significance. January 15 is the Day of the State Security of Ukraine. Employees of this service ensure the security of the president, prime minister, people's deputies and other high-ranking officials, as well as the protection of strategic facilities. Most aspects of their work remain closed, because confidentiality is the key to the effectiveness of the service.
Also, famous Ukrainians were born on this day, including historian and orientalist Agatangel Krymsky, poet Leonid Chernov, and soldier of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Vasyl Hukalo.
Internationally, January 15 marks the birthday of Wikipedia, the world's most popular online encyclopedia, used by millions of people every day. At the same time, experts remind that the information in it is created by users, therefore it requires a critical attitude. In addition, the world celebrates World Kombucha Day, a fermented drink based on kombucha, which has become fashionable among supporters of a healthy lifestyle in recent years. This date also falls on Bagel Day, Hat Day, Strawberry Ice Cream Day, and Fresh Juice Day.
In Ukrainian folk tradition, January 15 was considered a difficult and even dangerous day. According to signs, blue clouds in the evening foreshadowed a sharp change in the weather, a bright moon - a strong wind, and a thaw or melting snow - early spring. People believed that evil spirits were activated on this day, so they tried to leave the house less. They cleaned their homes, washed windows, and swept chimneys, and women baked hearty pies with vegetables. To protect children from the evil eye, a dry branch of thistle was placed under the cradle.
According to popular belief, on January 15, one should not start important matters, change their place of residence or work, or go on long journeys. They were especially warned against communicating with strangers — not accepting gifts from them or inviting them into their homes, so as not to bring trouble.
