On the evening of July 19, an attempt was made on former MP, professor and linguist Iryna Farion on Masaryka Street in Lviv near the house where she lived. The killer fired one shot and quickly fled. As a result of the attempt, Farion received a gunshot wound to the head and, despite the efforts of doctors, died in the hospital at 11:20 p.m.
The incident shook the country, leaving many questions unanswered. Here are possible explanations for the murder and some context that may help explain why it happened.
Versions
On the night of July 19-20, the police considered several versions of the reasons for the murder of Iryna Farion. The main ones are related to her public and political activities, as well as personal hostility towards her. Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko noted during a night briefing that other versions may appear, and the investigation is ongoing.
Public and political activity
Iryna Farion was a well-known linguist and active political figure. She advocated for the defense of the Ukrainian language and culture for many years, often making harsh statements against everything Soviet and Russian in Ukraine. Her activities repeatedly sparked public debates and protests.
Farion was also active in the political party “Svoboda” and took radical positions on the banning of the UOC (MP) in Ukraine. This could have created many enemies among opponents of her political views.
Personal animosity
Farion also had her opponents among her colleagues, especially after the scandal surrounding her communist past, which she had long denied. After journalists found documents in 2013 confirming her membership in the Communist Party, her reputation suffered a serious blow. Although Farion later confirmed this fact, her relations with many colleagues remained tense.
Recent events and scandals
Recently, the Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings against Iryna Farion because of her statements about Russian-speaking servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This could also cause discontent among certain circles. In addition, Farion was involved in a scandal when she published the personal data of a pro-Ukrainian student from Crimea on her social networks, which led to his persecution by Russian special services.
Suspect
Local residents had spotted a suspicious stranger near the Farion driveway a few weeks before the attack. He was dressed unnaturally warmly for the hot weather, which raised suspicions among residents. Police have confirmed that this stranger is the prime suspect in the case.
The murder of Irina Farion remains unsolved, but several versions and circumstances point to possible causes. Her active social and political activities, radical views, and personal conflicts could have been the reason for this crime. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement continues to work to solve this high-profile murder.
