President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on postponing the celebration of Children's Day from June 1 to November 20. The corresponding document was published on the official website of the head of state.
The explanatory note to the decree notes that the changes are being made to harmonize the Ukrainian calendar with international practice. It is November 20 that the world celebrates Universal Children's Day, a date that symbolizes the adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
According to the president, the previous tradition of celebrating June 1st developed more out of inertia than through a meaningful connection to specific events or international standards. At the same time, more and more public organizations, educational institutions, and human rights activists have called for focusing on November 20th, a day of global importance in the field of children's rights protection.
The new approach is expected to contribute to greater attention to children's rights in the context of the international legal field and stimulate the implementation of relevant changes in the fields of education, social protection and legislation.
