The cervical spine is one of the most vulnerable areas of the human body. Despite its high mobility, it consists of small and weak vertebrae, and the muscular corset here is less powerful than in the back, while the load on the neck is enormous.
As Radio Club reports, the constant "crunching" of the neck not only leads to abrasion of the joints. The main danger lies inside the spinal column. Through the cervical vertebrae pass arteries and veins that transport oxygen to the brain. A sharp jerk of the head can damage or rupture these vessels, which threatens with serious complications.
Mechanical impact on the cervical spine can also trigger a herniated disc. As a result, blood vessels become compressed, the brain does not receive enough oxygen, which causes severe headaches, dizziness, and even speech disorders.
There is a real risk of a vertebral fracture. Minor injuries are treated by wearing a special brace, the Schantz collar, for 6–8 weeks. In severe cases, the patient may require surgery and months of being in a rigid cast.
Therefore, sudden movements and "daily crunching" of the neck can be not just a habit, but a serious threat to health. Experts advise to control movements, strengthen the muscular corset of the neck and consult a doctor at the first symptoms.
