Tuberculosis remains a serious problem in public health around the world. According to WHO, about a quarter of the planet's population is infected with mycobacterium tuberculosis, although in many cases the disease is not manifested. One of the most effective methods of dealing with the disease is preventive treatment that prevents the development of an active form of the disease in people at increased risk of infection.
Ukraine has created all the conditions for free diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis according to international standards. Particular attention is paid to groups of high risk-people who have been in contact with patients with active tuberculosis, HIV-infected, dialysis patients and persons who expect organ transplantation. It is important that the presence of an active form of the disease is excluded before prophylactic treatment.
The main advantages of preventive treatment are a significant decrease in the likelihood of tuberculosis and minimizing the risk of its spread. This is especially true in the conditions of war, when the movement of the population poses additional threats to the mass spread of the disease.
Ukrainians can undergo preventive treatment in local medical institutions without changing their usual lifestyle. Both phthisiologists and family doctors can prescribe therapy. Depending on the individual indications, the course lasts from one to three months.
With the implementation of international standards and a decentralized approach, the Ukrainian health care system provides accessible and effective preventive treatment that helps to stop the spread of tuberculosis and protect the most vulnerable categories of the population.
