On Saturday, July 20, Orthodox Christians commemorate the memory of the Prophet Elijah and Reverend Athanasius of Brest. It is one of the most revered summer holidays in the Ukrainian church tradition.
That celebrate July 20
The prophet Elijah is one of the greatest Old Testament Saints, who lived for nine centuries before the birth of Christ. He openly opposed paganism, called for faith in a single god, and was considered the patron saint of rain, lightning and thunder. Many folk signs are associated with this.
Also, this day is remembered by St. Athanasius of Brest - Abbot, who defended the Orthodox faith in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. He was persecuted, was executed in 1648 and later canonized.
What is started to do on this day
On July 20, believers pray to Elijah's health, good harvest, rain. Reverend Athanasius is asked for healing and support in difficult life situations. The temples holy worship services, processions, and often bring fruits and bread to the church for consecration and further alms.
The church urges to maintain spiritual purity: not to be angry, not to envy, not to be misleading, not to refuse help.
