On March 22, Orthodox believers in Ukraine honor the memory of St. John the Ladder, an outstanding ascetic of the 6th–7th centuries, author of the spiritual work "The Ladder," which became one of the most important guides in Christian ascetic life.
Saint John was born in Constantinople and chose the monastic path at a young age. At the age of 16, he went to Mount Sinai, where he took monastic vows and spent many years under the spiritual guidance of his mentor Martyrius. After his death, John retired to the desert, where he lived for about 40 years in prayer and fasting.
For his deep faith and asceticism, he received the gift of foresight and spiritual guidance. People from different countries came to him for advice and help. At the age of 75, the saint was elected abbot of the Sinai Monastery. It was during this period that he wrote his famous "Ladder" - a spiritual work in which he described 30 steps of the ascent to perfection.
In addition to John of the Cross, on this day, according to the new church calendar, the holy martyr Basil of Ancyra, the martyr Drosida, and the Venerable Isaac of Dalmatia are honored.
According to the old style, March 22 commemorates the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, one of the most revered holidays in the Orthodox tradition.
The people called this day Vasyl Tepliy, because it is during this period that the arrival of real spring is usually felt. One of the interesting traditions is baking cookies in the shape of a ladder - "ladder". The number of "steps" corresponded to the number of family members. It was believed that whoever tasted such cookies would be healthy and happy throughout the year.
On this day, believers pray for health, peace of mind, and strengthening of faith. It is also customary to turn to Saint Basil with requests for protection and support.
However, there are certain prohibitions. It is not recommended to quarrel, gossip, be jealous, or refuse help. According to popular beliefs, you should not sweep the house or take out the garbage - this can lead to financial losses. It is also undesirable to do needlework or borrow anything, especially flour.
Many weather observations are associated with the signs of this day. If the sun is in red circles at dawn, the year will be fruitful. Small blue clouds portend warmth with rain, and a warm day means the speedy return of migratory birds. If sparrows bathe in puddles, they are waiting for warming, and if cats sleep a lot, a cold snap is possible.
It is also considered a good omen if houseplants bloom in the house on this day - it is a symbol of well-being and good changes.
