The European Union has announced the extension of free roaming for Ukrainian refugees for another year. The decision was made to support people who have been forced to flee their country due to conflict and instability.
Ukrainians will now be able to use their home mobile phone tariffs in EU countries without additional charges for four months. EU citizens, in turn, will have the same rights when visiting Ukraine.
Telecommunications operators from the EU and Ukraine signed a joint statement for the first time on coordinated efforts to ensure and stabilize affordable or free roaming and international calls between the EU and Ukraine in April 2022.
Separately, in February 2023, the European Commission proposed to join Ukraine to the EU roaming area. In April of the same year, the EU-Ukraine Association Committee adopted the European Commission's proposal to join Ukraine to the EU roaming rules.
As a reminder, on June 18, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law on the implementation of European roaming legislation. The government approved the relevant document in April last year.
