European countries do not have a clear strategy on the future millions of Ukrainian refugees after the possible cessation of hostilities in Ukraine. About it reports an influential European edition of Euractiv , referring to its own sources in European institutions.
According to journalists, after the Armistice, Ukrainians who are protected by temporary protection directives may lose their legal status massively. Currently, the EU countries are giving Ukrainians the protection is automatically, according to a single rule of law, but the further fate of this mechanism is raising more questions.
“The ceasefire can completely change the situation. This will open up for the host countries the opportunity to decide whether to keep the protection regime, integrate refugees or call them back home, ” Euractiv .
In fact, it is said that each country can go its own way - from strengthening of integration programs to the gradual curtailment of temporary protection and repatriation of Ukrainians. At the same time, the European Union has not yet introduced a single vision for further action.
The EU Council is expected to consider the status of Ukrainian refugees at a meeting of internal affairs ministers, which will take place in June. However, it is already clear that the possible cessation of hostilities will complicate the political positions of many governments that face internal pressure against the background of economic problems and increased migration tension.
We will remind, as of 2024 in the EU countries there are more than 4 million Ukrainians who received temporary protection after a full -scale invasion of Russia. The EU Directive, which guarantees their status, is currently operating until March 2025.
