The proposal of the Donald Trump administration on the "peace agreement" between Ukraine and Russia has caused deep concern in the European Union. According to Financial Times , it is about an ultimattive projection of an agreement, which provides for the recognition of Crimea in Russian and the rejection of Ukraine from the Euro -Atlantic course - in favor of Moscow.
European diplomats have already called such a scenario unacceptable. Brussels warns that the idea of the United States can not only put a cross on Ukrainian interests, but also cause a deep crisis within NATO and the EU.
"Crimea, as well as the desire of Ukraine to enter NATO, is red lines for us. We cannot refuse it," one of the high -ranking EU officials said.
Washington, according to FT sources, puts pressure on Kiev, offering the conditions for the Kremlin favorable for "agree or stay alone". At the same time, Ukraine, in exchange for abandonment of territories and strategic goals, actually receives no guarantees.
"The worst scenario is if the US does not reach the agreement and Europe has to choose between Ukraine's support and Washington loyalty," one of the European diplomats said.
The position of some EU capitals has already been formed: they do not support any peaceful scenario that provides for Russia's concessions or a compromise with the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Jeremy Shapiro, US Program Director of the European Council on International Relations, notes:
"Europeans have always tried to avoid open confrontation with the States. But this time the risk is the split of transatlantic unity."
The NATO Summit, scheduled for the end of June, can be a moment of truth: if the US does not give up an ultimate course, Europe will have to make a historical decision - to stay with an ally or with principles.
