In Izmail, a moped driver opened fire on police, one dead

On the evening of August 5, a police officer died while performing his duties in the city of Izmail, Odessa region, the National Police of Ukraine reported.

At around 6:00 p.m. on the outskirts of the city, officers from the patrol police response sector stopped a moped driver to check his documents. According to preliminary information, the 45-year-old man began to behave aggressively, after which he pulled out a firearm and opened fire on law enforcement officers.

One of the police officers was injured. In response, his partner used his service weapon and wounded the attacker. Both were urgently taken to the hospital, but the life of the senior police lieutenant could not be saved - he died from his injuries.

The attacker, who is in the hospital with gunshot wounds, was detained in a procedural manner. He has already been declared a suspect.

Police are investigating the incident under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — assault on the life of a law enforcement officer. This article carries a penalty of life imprisonment.
