In 2024, about 500,000 people left Ukraine, and according to the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), in 2025 this number will increase by another 200 thousand. According to the NBU inflationary report, although there is a certain return of migrants in the following years, the total number of those who return home will be much lower due to their adaptation to life abroad.
The National Bank notes that high security risks, constant shelling and destruction, the preservation of the deficit adversely affect the quality of life of Ukrainians, which causes further external migration.
"During 2024, migrants from Ukraine continued and in total, it amounted to about 0.5 million people in a year, which corresponded to the NBU estimates ... In 2025, the pure outflow of external migrants (about 0.2 million people) is expected to continue," the report reads.
According to the NBU, a positive migration balance is expected in Ukraine since 2026 - about 200 thousand people will return. In 2027, this process can accelerate, and the number of those who will return will reach 500 thousand.
